EMTB Forums verdict

The Rocky Mountain Instinct Powerplay 2024 is a Canadian carbon trail eMTB built around Rocky's own Dyname 4.0 motor system, with a 150/140 mm travel split and Smoothlink four-bar suspension. Headline numbers: 108 Nm of torque, 700 W manufacturer-claimed peak, 720 Wh removable battery, a 65.5 degree head angle, 22.9 kg claimed and a £5,991 base price. The community read on the Instinct Powerplay platform is mixed — strong motor longevity and high-pivot suspension benefits, but real concerns over Rocky Mountain's recent corporate situation and parts availability.

Drive system and range. The Rocky Mountain Dyname 4.0 is a proprietary motor system, delivering 108 Nm of torque and a 700 W manufacturer-claimed peak at a 3.0 kg motor weight. The Dyname's most distinctive characteristic is its strong long-term reliability profile in heavy use: jbv reports a Rocky Mountain Powerplay Instinct "with the original motor lasted 4 years with hard frequent riding by heavy rider, motor had some issues but all repaired and still going". Fr3nch reports "no motor protection warnings at 1,000 km despite poor shifting technique from rider" on a 2023 Instinct PP. The 720 Wh battery is removable, well-sized for the 23 kg trail chassis, and supports comfortable all-day riding.

Geometry and handling. The bike comes in four sizes (S, M, L, XL) with reach progressing from 420 mm (S) through 450 mm (M), 470 mm (L) and 505 mm (XL). The 65.5 degree head angle is fixed across all sizes — conservative for a 150 mm trail eMTB by 2024 standards. Chainstay grows from 435 mm to 442 mm across the range and wheelbase from 1,185 mm (S) to 1,295 mm (XL). The Smoothlink four-bar suspension is well-developed. Suns_PSD notes Rocky chose "high pivot design to manage chain kickback effects on suspension" on the Instinct family.

Build and value. Only the base trim is on file at £5,991. thbo notes that the "Instinct Powerplay C90 BC Edition and 2021 model have alloy triangle and alloy rims, not carbon" — useful detail given the trim-naming inconsistency.

Community-verified strengths. First, motor durability: jbv reports 4 years of heavy use with the original motor. Second, Smoothlink suspension is well-praised: Lantz notes Rocky Mountain's straight seat tube allows for long dropper posts. Third, the Dyname motor's traction-control programme is well-developed.

Caveats and known gripes. First, Rocky Mountain's recent corporate situation: SurlyJohn warns "Rocky Mountain has gone into liquidation, making replacement batteries for Gen 1 Instinct Powerplay extremely difficult to source. Battery reconditioning may be the only option" — a serious concern for long-term parts availability. Second, sensor and torque-arm durability: mrjr1000 reports "third speed sensor failure in two years, torque sensor arms break at the same spot once weakened" on a 2021 C70 — though this may be a Gen-specific issue not affecting later motor generations. Third, the platform's more conservative head angle (65.5 degrees) sits behind modern aggressive trail eMTB rivals.

Verdict. The Rocky Mountain Instinct Powerplay 2024 suits the rider who specifically wants the Dyname 4.0 motor with its proven long-term durability and Rocky's Smoothlink suspension, and who is comfortable with the brand's recent corporate uncertainty and parts-supply question marks. Less suitable for buyers who need long-term replacement-parts confidence, the slackest modern geometry, or a major-brand dealer network with full warranty backing. Production status: current — but verify warranty terms and parts availability with the dealer before committing.
